Your home’s exterior should be inspected at least once a year, thereby allowing you to deal with any potential issues before they become bigger and costlier. While our skillful and efficient Home Improvement Experts are more than willing to do this for you, there are also some things that you can look for on your own that may alert you to any problem areas.
Siding
Walk around your house and look for any portions of siding that may be loose as they could be letting moisture into the walls. This is important whether it is vinyl, aluminum, or any other type of siding. Also look for any pieces that are cracked, chipped, or otherwise broken as those should be replaced to prevent further issues.
Windows and Doors
With regard to your doors and windows, you’ll want to inspect the frames, as well as the putty that keeps the glass in place, looking for any wear that could be a sign that they aren’t keeping the weather out effectively.
You don’t have to inspect every window, but be sure to look at the ones that see the most rain and weather due to lack of coverage. Use a screwdriver to lightly poke around it to make sure it isn’t rotting, and take a quick look at any weather stripping to make sure it is still in good condition.
Caulk
Any seams or crevices that have caulk in them should be inspected to ensure that it is still intact. If it is split or dried out, it needs to be attended to by removing the old caulk and replacing it with new.
Soffits and Fascia
When inspecting your soffits and fascia, look for any areas that could allow bugs and insects entry into your home while also paying attention to any areas that are sagging or loose. Additionally, clean them out if they contain debris as this could prevent air flow into the upper portion of your home. This will help your roof last longer by protecting it from the inside out.
Vegetation
While doing your inspection, it is a prime time to trim any vegetation around your home. Ideally, trees should be no less than six feet away, and you want smaller bushes to be no closer than 12 inches so that nothing is close enough to harm your home’s exterior. Ivy can be extremely damaging, so you might want to clear that out altogether.
