Different Styles of Windows
Whether you are completely re-doing the exterior of your home (siding and windows), just buying new replacement windows, or building a new home – the style and placement of windows is a very important aspect to consider. We sometimes forget how much a window can change the look and feel of a house.
Double Hung Windows
Double hung windows are becoming more and more popular. This style of window allows the lower half of the window to slide up, and the upper half of the window to slide down. The option gives you control of where the breeze comes in.
Most double hung windows are made so that each sash (portion of window) tilts. When you think about cleaning windows, you can see the brilliance of this feature!
These windows offer maximum ventilation capability when the window is open, extending the full height of your windows, and come in a variety of sizes and colors for every home.
Casement style windows are hinged on the sides (like a door) and usually crank open and outwards. These windows can be large and offer great ventilation. They also tend to close with a tight seal, keeping the inside of your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Awning style windows are hinged at the top and open outwards at the bottom. These let in the fresh air, without the wind blowing things around. You can usually leave these windows open during a light rain, feeling the cool, clean air while staying dry.
Fixed windows are airtight and do not open. Their sole purpose in life is to allow light into the room. Fixed windows are also decorative and come in several different shapes and sizes. Picture an octagon shape window at the peak of your home, giving light into your attic.
Bay and Bow Windows
Bow and bay windows add a spacious feel to any room. They both have an advantage over traditional windows in that they provide a larger viewing area to the outdoors. Bay and bow windows are a good investment because they increase value of the home.
Choosing a Windows Style
Walk across the street and really look at your house; look at the style and decide how you want your home to present itself. Then drive around and look at windows of other people’s homes for ideas.
This will become one of those things that you never really paid attention to in the past, but now notice it everywhere. You will start looking at different windows on houses, townhomes, businesses… everywhere you look you will now notice the windows.
