Your home is likely one of your most valuable assets. That makes looking after its roof essential if you want to safeguard its value for years, and even decades, to come. Our experienced and knowledgeable roofing experts recommend that you inspect your roof at least twice a year, like in the spring and fall when you’re cleaning and maintaining your gutters. This provides the opportunity to stop any issues before they cause more damage and become even more costly.
How to Conduct a Proper Roof Inspection
First and foremost, if you’re not comfortable doing your own roof inspection, that is okay. We’re committed to providing a complete roofing service, so just contact us and we’ll do the inspection for you. On the other hand, if you’re a do-it-yourselfer and it is safe enough, you can get right up on your roof and inspect it yourself.
Here are some things you’ll want to look out for:
- Missing, damaged, or worn shingles. Shingles that are missing or damaged can’t properly protect your home, which makes repairing or replacing them a priority.
- Fungus, algae, moss, or mildew. Anything growing on your roof is a sign that it isn’t drying properly, potentially causing rot, and doing greater damage.
- Flashing that is no longer sealed. Check for cracks in the seals as water can seep through them if they are no longer intact, creating damage to the interior of your home.
- Buckling of the roof deck. Does the roof appear to be buckling in places? If so, you’ll want to address this issue immediately.
Additionally, you’ll want to make sure no tree branches, leaves, or other items are lying on your roof as they can cause damage to it or clog your gutters. Trim any branches that hang overhead so they don’t break and fall or allow pesky critters to climb on your roof and do some damage of their own.
Conduct an Interior Roof Inspection Too
Once you’ve completed your exterior roof inspection, you want to move to the interior of your home and inspect there as well. Check your ceilings for water spots on your ceiling or trails down your walls that are darker in color. Go into your attic and look at the underside of the roof as well to see if you see any buckling or potential issues that could signal that there is a problem.
